Performing Ensemble ClassesThese classes, most learning is structured around performances in the Winter, Spring, Pops Concerts, and various other performances throughout the year. When the groups combine in a symphony orchestra for the Winter and Pops Concerts, after-school rehearsals are a requirement.
Students in these ensembles are encouraged to have prior experience and music reading abilities, but Orchestra and Wind Ensemble can take beginning students who are motivated to do the work required to improve on their instrument. This is our only audition-based class. To make the ensemble, students must meet the following requirements:
Non-audition based String Orchestra, accepting Violinists, Violists, Cellists, Bassists of all abilities. Occasional opportunities for harp and piano.
Students are encouraged to participate for all three trimesters, but it is not a requirement of the class. Non-audition based concert band, accepting students of all abilities who play flute, oboe, clarinet, bass clarinet, bassoon, alto saxophone, tenor saxophone, baritone saxophone, trumpet, french horn, trombone, euphonium, tuba, percussion, and occasionally piano.
Students are encouraged to participate for all three trimesters, but it is not a requirement of the class. |
Non-Performing Music ClassStudents enrolled in this class do not need to have prior musical experience, although some of our students will join with some prior knowledge and skill. While students perform for each other, in class, there is no requirement for students to perform in concerts with the performing ensemble students (although some opportunities do come up for motivated students).
The first trimester, students will learn the basics of reading music while learning to play hand percussion (African and Latin drumming), piano, ukulele, and guitar. They also learn to collaborate with other musicians in duets, quartets, and in larger ensembles. In second trimester, students will put their instrumental skills to use and will also learn some basic skills for music production, using music editing and sequencing software. Students will record, compose, arrange, mix, and master their projects to produce a finished musical project to be shared. Students in this class are not required to participate in any after school events. |
