Jazz Club was founded in the 2017-2018 school year by Tessa Witkofsky as part of a Legacy Genius Project. Since its first year, the group has continued under the leadership of students, including: Gabe Tassinari, Dharma Dorazio, EJ Hardy, Ethan Fairclough, Andrew Roelen, and (most recently,) Sophia Martin and Gabe Dela Caza.
This jazz club meets twice weekly before school. Depending on student enrollment, the club may divide into smaller ensembles (combos) for focused rehearsals. Members delve into the rich history and theoretical underpinnings of the jazz tradition, developing a strong foundation in improvisation. The curriculum encompasses the Great American Songbook and explores the works of a diverse range of influential jazz artists.
Anyone can participate, all instruments and skill levels welcome. A basic working knowledge of music theory and notation is definitely helpful for this group. To learn more about joining Jazz Club for the 25-26 school year, reach out to this year's club president, Sophie Martin.
A recent highlight of this club and combo is that this year marks the second year of a paired legacy project, the "Swingin' for the Cure" benefit concert series. While the receiving non-profit organization associated with each benefit concert has changed, the mission remains clear, to raise money for disease research while celebrating the tradition of Jazz. Brava to our own Sophie Martin and the Jazz Club for the lastest installation in this series, their concert on January 19th, 2025!
